NIH Biosketch

This guide contains instructions for the NIH Biosketch and the use of the SciENcv tool.

New NIH Biosketch Format

NIH has published a new format for its biosketch, required for all grant and cooperative agreement applications submitted for due dates on or after May 25, 2015.

Changes to the format include:

  • An extended page limit from four to five pages
  • A new section allowing researchers to describe up to five of their most significant contributions to science. Each contribution can include a list of up to four relevant publications.

SciENcv is a tool that researchers can use to create a biosketch for NIH grant applications, as well as other federal agencies. SciENcv is not required to create the biosketch, but it is a useful tool for assembling the information required for the new biosketch. Researchers can access SciENcv through their My NCBI accounts.

SciENcv allows researchers to create profiles by entering information manually; by importing data from eRA Commons, ORCID, or NSF; or by copying an existing profile.

In addition to the NCBI video tutorial below, detailed information about using SciENcv to create a biosketch can be found in NCBI's help documentation.
