This guide is produced by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Oral Health to assist children, adults, patients with special health care needs and their caregivers and advocates with finding affordable public health dental care services in Maryland and in the immediate surrounding region.
The NIDCR is the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on dental, oral and craniofacial health and disease. NIDCR is one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The report critically reviews the relationships between oral health and general health and well-being, provides major messages for the American people, and calls for the development of a National Oral Health Plan that will “improve quality of life and eliminate health disparities by facilitating collaborations among individuals, health care providers, communities, and policymakers at all levels of society and by taking advantage of existing initiatives.”
Under the leadership of the Surgeon General, this report builds on the 2000 report and and the experience of private and public plans and programs already under way. The result is a set of five principal actions and implementation strategies that constitute the National Call To Action To Promote Oral Health.
