NIH Public Access Policy: Associating Funding to Your Publications

The instructions on this page provide steps to ensure compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.

Citing the PMCID Number

When citing articles affected by this policy in applications, proposals, and reports submitted to NIH, you must include the PMCID number with the citation.

If a PMCID has not yet been assigned by your article by the time you need to submit the paperwork, you can substitute the NIHMS ID number in place of the PMCID number.

If you have the PMID number and need the PMCID number you can use the PMID:PMCID Converter to find it.

Example:
Cerrato A, Parisi M, Santa Anna S, Missirlis F, Guru S, Agarwal S, Sturgill D, Talbot T, Spiegel A, Collins F, Chandrasekharappa S, Marx S, Oliver B. Genetic interactions between Drosophila melanogaster menin and Jun/Fos. Dev Biol. 2006 Oct 1; 298(1): 59-70. PMCID: PMC2291284

Example, before PMCID is available:
Cerrato A, Parisi M, Santa Anna S, Missirlis F, Guru S, Agarwal S, Sturgill D, Talbot T, Spiegel A, Collins F, Chandrasekharappa S, Marx S, Oliver B. Genetic interactions between Drosophila melanogaster menin and Jun/Fos. Dev Biol. 2006 Oct 1; 298(1): 59-70. NIHMSID: NIHMS44135

Acknowledging NIH Grant Support

The NIH grants policy requires that all publications arising from NIH funding must include the following three statements:

1. A specific acknowledgement of NIH grant support, such as:

"Research reported in this [publication/press release] was supported by [name of the Institute(s), Center, or other NIH offices] of the National Institutes of Health under award number [specific NIH grant number(s) in this format: R01GM987654]."

2. An acknowledgement of the level of NIH funding that indicates:

a. the percentage and dollar amounts of the total program or project costs financed with Federal money and

b. the percentage and dollar amounts of the total costs financed by nongovernmental sources.

3. A disclaimer that says:

"The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health."

Retrospectively Associating Awards with Publications

If NIH grant support was not acknowledged in the original publication, researchers may retrospectively associate awards with publications using My Bibliography.

To associate multiple citations with awards at one time, select the citations you want to associate to awards, and click on "Assign Awards".

Select either the NIH Awards or HRA Awards tab, choose the relevant awards from the list, and click save.

To associate an individual citation to an award, click the "Add award" link underneath the citation. Select the awards associated with this publication and save.
