About This Guide

Welcome to Maryland Health Careers! This guide is designed to help high school and college students explore health care careers available in Maryland. We have chosen to highlight fifteen careers that are expected to have some of the most job openings over the next ten years.

Health Care Workforce Forecast

Health care is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the United States. In 2008, health care provided 14.3 million jobs nationwide. Forty percent were in hospitals, twenty-one percent were in nursing and residential care facilities, and sixteen percent were in physicians’ offices. The national employment rate is projected to grow by twenty-two percent through 2018, with the addition of 3.2 million new jobs.

In Maryland, the health care industry has remained stable through the recent recession and continues to grow. The state government is currently implementing health care reform and one goal of the plan is to increase the health care workforce by up to 25 percent before 2020. This increase will be needed to accommodate primary care services for the expanding coverage of hundreds of thousands of newly insured patients, and also the greater volume of health services needed for the aging population.

However, Maryland is also facing an ongoing shortage of health care workers. There is a gap between the number of available positions and the number of new workers entering the workforce. This is partly due to low numbers of graduates from in-state educational institutions and the increasing number of health care professionals that are aging and retiring.
