NIH Public Access Policy: Manage Compliance

The instructions on this page provide steps to ensure compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.

Viewing Compliance Status Using My Bibliography

After adding your citations to My Bibliography and linking your eRA Commons account, set the Display Settings to the Award View as shown below.

An article may have one of the following statuses:

Journal articles that are compliant with the Public Access Policy and have a PMCID number listed are marked with a green dot.

Articles that have recently been submitted to the NIH Manuscript Submission System are in process and are marked with a yellow dot. They have an NIHMS ID number assigned to them.

Articles that are not compliant with the Public Access Policy are marked with a red dot. Clicking on 'edit status' will begin the compliance process. Clicking on 'add award' will add NIH funding information.

When NIH cannot determine the compliance status of an article, it is marked with a question mark. Clicking on 'edit status' will allow you to provide additional information and determine the article's status.

Articles that are not covered by the NIH Public Access Policy, such as those accepted for publication before April 7, 2008, are marked as Not Applicable.

Managing Compliance Status

Click on the link associated with non-compliant articles (either a red dot, a question mark, or the "edit status" link).  The following box will open. Use the options provided to change the status of the citation.
