Interprofessional Education Day, February 19, 2014

ACTIVITY 6 IN DETAIL

Ethical Considerations in Genetics and Prenatal Counseling

Objectives:

  1. To identify and explore potential psychosocial and ethical issues in a prenatal genetic counseling session
  2. To understand and appreciate the contribution of other health professionals’ expertise in a complex medical and ethical patient problem
  3. To understand the scope of practice for each discipline and execute those roles appropriately
  4. To collaborate in an interprofessional interview/encounter with a standardized patient family

Description of Activity:

Faculty will review the role of each discipline in the care of a complex medical and ethical patient problem. Participants will work as an interprofessional team to interview a standardized patient family requesting genetics counseling services. They will be asked to identify and discuss concerns and ethical considerations. As a group they will construct goals for a future meeting with the SP family and using principles of effective team building work to develop a plan for patient centered care.
