Guide on how to submit and find data in the UMB Data Catalog

UMB Data Catalog

The UMB Data Catalog facilitates discovery of data by providing a searchable and browsable collection of records describing datasets generated by UMB researchers. Rather than functioning as a repository to store data, the catalog provides information about datasets. Each record includes a description, keywords, dataset format and size, access rights and links to associated articles.

The UMB Data Catalog is designed to:

  • Increase the visibility of research data generated by UMB researchers
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration by identifying common research interests
  • Support the process of data re-use and data sharing

If you are interested in submitting a dataset to the UMB Data Catalog, have a suggestion for additional datasets to add, or are willing to serve as a local expert, please use the Contact Us form.

Why Include Your Data in a Data Catalog?

Including your dataset in the UMB Data Catalog increases its visibility and accessibility as the catalog may be used to search for and locate secondary data sources for future research.
Potential benefits of submitting your data include:

  • Raise awareness of your research on campus and beyond
  • Link to your dataset record in articles, CVs, etc.
  • Increase opportunities for data re-use and collaboration

For sensitive data that cannot be openly shared or publicly, the catalog can provide instructions for requesting access to the data. Researchers can contact dataset submitters via UMB email address with the “Access via Author” button.

Data Catalog Vs. Data Repository

A data catalog is NOT a data repository. Data repositories store, preserve, and facilitate access to research data. UMB does not have a dedicated repository for research data, however the UMB Digital Archive accepts other academic works created by the UMB community to digitally capture and preserve the historical impact of the University.

The UMB Data Catalog exists to point and direct researchers to data repositories that house data created by UMB. Even research data that is not openly available in a data repository or cannot be publicly shared due to containing sensitive data can be listed in the data catalog. Your dataset can be cited from the UMB Data Catalog and included in your scholarly profile (see Research Impact: Unique Author ID).
