NIH acknowledges that data management and sharing will involve costs and allows researchers to request funds to cover the reasonable costs associated with data management and sharing.
Allowable costs
- Must be incurred during the performance period for DMS activities
- Should be included in the budget/budget justification sections of the NIH grant or funding application, not in the DSM plan.
- Can include the costs of data curation, de-identification, formatting, developing supporting documentation, local data management, and preserving and sharing data through repositories (data deposit fees).
Unallowable costs
- Infrastructure costs that are included in institutional overhead
- Costs associated with the routine conduct of research, including costs associated with collecting or gaining access to research data
- Costs that are double charged or inconsistently charged as both direct and indirect costs
