3D Printing at the Innovation Space: Filament to Choose

How-To Guide for 3D Printing

Filament available in the Innovation Space

The following types of plastic filament are available in the Innovation Space:

PLA is our most used filament. If you have no concern for printing material, PLA will serve your needs.

PLA should be used if your print requires an organic, and/or bio-degradable material.

ABS can provide more "give" than PLA, and might be better suited for prints that will be used in mechanical settings.

PVA dissolves in water, and is used for printing supports that can not be removed by hand. The Environmental Health and Safety Department tested our PVA and determined that it is not flammable, and that the wastewater containing PVA can be poured down the drain in line with common lab protocols.

Listed below are the types of filament each of our 3D printers accept. Also included are links to the manufacturer website, and the safety data sheet (where available) associated with each filament.
