Speaking with Impact

Day One - The Speaking with Impact lesson, the first in a series of four, focuses on the basics of public speaking and begins the process of developing comfort with speaking in front of a group of people.

Day One Objectives:

  • Identify the importance of public speaking
  • Articulate key concepts in being an effective and successful public speaker
  • Deliver short speaking selection for fellow students
  • Evaluate effectiveness of fellow students’ public speaking selections

Day Two - The Speaking with Impact lesson builds on the conversations, techniques, and practice of Class 1 with a focus on speaking clearly and adding inflection to the delivery of a short, approximately two minute speech. Students will have received the speech content at the end of the first class and should have practiced the speech in preparation for today’s class, Lesson 2.

Day Two Objectives:

  • Describe at least five tips for effective speaking.
  • Deliver a two minute speech with clarity and inflection

Materials for Days One/Two:

  • Instructor computer and projector (optional- can put handout content in Powerpoint)
  • Blackboard or Whiteboard
  • Flipcharts/large post-it notes with markers
  • Handouts
  • Optional: If possible videotaping and playback equipment to records and review public speaking

  • 4.12.1 Use skills for communicating effectively with family, peers, and others to enhance health.
  • 8.12.4 Adapt health messages and communication techniques to a specific target audience.

Healthy People 2020 Objectives

AH-2      Increase the proportion of adolescents who participate in extracurricular and/or out-of-school activities.

AH-3.2   Increase the proportion of parents who attend events and activities in which their adolescents participate.

National Partnership for Action

Goal 1         Awareness - Increase awareness of the significance of health disparities, their impact on the nation, and the actions necessary to improve health outcomes for racial, ethnic, and underserved populations.

Strategy 2:  Develop and support partnerships among public, nonprofit, and private entities to provide a comprehensive infrastructure to increase awareness, drive action, and ensure accountability in efforts to end health disparities and achieve health equity across the lifespan.

Goal 2:        Leadership - Strengthen and broaden leadership for addressing health disparities at all levels.

Strategy 7:  Invest in young people to prepare them to be future leaders and practitioners by actively engaging and including them in the planning and execution of health, wellness and safety initiatives.
